Premiere La Scala 2024 – Don Carlo

On 2023-12-07 La Scala rings in Season 2024

A major highlight at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan is the season premiere on 7 December 2023. The Season 2024 will commence with Don Carlo, an opera by Giuseppe Verdi starring Anna Netrebko, Francesco Meli, Luca Salsi a.m.o. The orchestra will be conducted by Riccardo Chailly. A new production of the Teatro alla Scala.

As every year, shortly before the feast of St. Ambrose, the whole of Milan is in a state of excitement when it comes to the opening of the season at La Scala. It is now the 435th season.

Opera Don Carlo

The 2024 season of the Teatro alla Scala will open on December 7th with the Verdi opera “Don Carlo”, exactly in the version that Giuseppe Verdi created in 1884 for the Teatro Piermarini (as the Teatro alla Scala is also called after its architect).

This was the first version in four acts instead of five, as the opera had been performed in Paris, Bologna and Milan in 1867 and 1868.
Verdi then reduced his “Don Carlo” to four acts for its performance at La Scala on January 10, 1884, removing the first act and some dances, thus incorporating the figure of Philip II, King of Spain, and father of Don Carlo moved to the center.
Thanks to the archives of the music publisher Ricordi, the scenes and sketches of the Don Carlo version from 1884 are safely stored in the Palazzo di Brera and preserved for posterity. The Ricordi Archive was purchased by the multinational Bertelsmann Verlag in 1994, which guarantees its preservation and cultural development.

The scenes by Daniel Bianco and the costumes by Oscar-winner Vera Squarciapino, which can be seen on December 7th, follow the libretto. The director Lluís Pasqual chose a classic floor plan with an ivory tower in the middle with a large golden reredos at the bottom, symbolizing the struggle between secular and spiritual power. The costumes are modern but reminiscent of the historical period, helping to create a dark atmosphere as required by the score and maestro Riccardo Chailly.

International Transmission of the Premiere

The premiere will be broadcast live in Italy on Rai 1, RaiPlay, Rai Radio 3 and Euroradio, on a big screen in the Ottagono of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and in numerous other locations throughout the city. The work will be broadcast live internationally on several television channels and on the streaming platform LaScalaTv.
