The opera “Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenze” (The Straw Hat of Florence) is an opera by Nino Rota , a renowned Italian composer known for his film scores. For the film music “The Godfather” he was awarded the Golden Globe for the best film music.
Nino Rota wrote the libretto together with his mother Ernesta Rinaldi. The opera tells a light and enchanting comedy, which was first performed ten years after its completion at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo in 1955 and directed by Bruno Campanella and Pier Luigi Pizzi for the Teatro alla Scala in 1998.

He wants to apologize for his horse’s gluttony, but the lady’s lover Emilio insists on replacing his lady’s hat with an identical one. When Fadinard is about to hand over the new hat, he is surprised by a series of unforeseen events and gets into numerous confusing situations. Ultimately, everything is cleared up and the story ends on a happy and forgiving note, while Fadinard and Elena can finally celebrate their wedding.
