Discover La Scala’s complete Ring of the Nibelung

The Teatro alla Scala Milano will stage Richard Wagner’s opera “Das Rheingold” on March 1 and 10, 2026. Das Rheingold is the prologue to the monumental „Ring of the Nibelung,“ transporting audiences into a realm of myth, magic, and the lust for power. From the very first measures, Wagner’s score exerts an eerie pull, depicting gods, giants, and dwarves vying for a cursed gold hoard.

The performances of Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung in March 2026 are part of the full Ring of the Nibelung cycle by Richard Wagner, staged at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. These productions can currently only be booked as a complete package including all four operas. Individual tickets are not available at this time. Remaining seats for selected performances may be released at a later date, depending on availability. This cycle offers a rare opportunity for music lovers to experience Wagner’s monumental work in its entirety at one of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.

Teatro alla Scala, inaugurated in 1778 and still synonymous with supreme operatic artistry, stands at the heart of Milan — a city celebrated for its fashion, history, and culinary excellence. Its façade of white marble leads into a magnificent interior: plush red velvet seating, gilded boxes, and a stage where legends are born. La Scala’s acoustics allow every voice and orchestral nuance to breathe. Icons such as Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, and Plácido Domingo have triumphed here. A visit to La Scala pairs perfectly with excursions to Lake Como, Lake Garda, or the historic towns of Bergamo and Brescia : culture, nature, and indulgence are just a train ride away. This transforms an opera evening into a holistic experience, showcasing the very best of northern Italy.

The Wagner opera Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), together with the three music dramas Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, form the complete work “Der Ring des Nibelungen“. The tetralogy Ring des Nibelungen is a “stage festival play for three days and one eve”

The Rheingold is the eve of the opera tetralogy and takes place in mythical antiquity. Gods and mermaids, giants and dwarves depict the conflicts in the struggle for power and love.

At the heart of Das Rheingold lies the dwarf Alberich, who steals gold guarded by the Rhine maidens and forges a ring granting domination over the world. Wotan, the chief of the gods, yearns for power and schemes to finance his future realm, Valhalla, forging a fateful pact with giants Fasolt and Fafner. But when Alberich feigns losing the ring, Wotan and the cunning fire spirit Loge trick the giants into relinquishing the gold—only to end up sacrificing the goddess Freia as collateral. Without Freia’s life-giving golden apples, the gods face demise. After dramatic maneuvers, they seize the treasure, but Alberich curses the ring with vengeful wrath. The prologue culminates in a triumphant entry into Valhalla, cast in ominous shadow. Wagner’s relentless build-up of tension and dramatic density lays the groundwork for the subsequent three operas, enchanting with unending leitmotifs and vibrant orchestral color.
