Ballet: Il Lago dei Cigni (Swan Lake)

by Rudolf Nureyev
music Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2025-07-07 ... 2025-07-17

“Swan Lake,” choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev , is a masterful interpretation of the classical ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Nureyev’s version gives the work a deeper psychological dimension by intensifying the character of Prince Siegfried and highlighting his inner struggles. The tragic love story between Prince Siegfried and the enchanted swan princess Odette is portrayed particularly poignantly in Nureyev’s production. With impressive dances and a gripping narrative, “Swan Lake” remains a timeless masterpiece under Nureyev’s artistic direction that never fails to captivate audiences.

The ballet “Swan Lake” tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who follows a flock of swans during a hunt and meets the enchanted swan princess Odette. She was turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Rothbart and can only take on her human form at night. Odette tells Siegfried that the curse can only be broken by a man’s true love.

Impressed by Odette, Siegfried vows to save her and invites her to the ball in his castle, where he is to choose his bride. At the ball, however, Rothbart’s daughter Odile appears, who, through magic, looks deceptively like Odette. Siegfried, blinded by her resemblance and her seductive powers, falsely declares his love to Odile and promises to marry her.

Siegfried realizes his mistake when Rothbart and Odile reveal their true identities. Desperate, he returns to the lake to beg Odette for forgiveness. Siegfried and Odette decide to die together to break the curse and reunite in the afterlife. Their love ultimately triumphs over Rothbart’s magic and they find peace in death. The ballet ends with a touching scene in which the swans mourn the sacrificial deaths of Odette and Siegfried.
