In Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “La Fille du Régiment”, Juan Diego Flórez takes on the role of Tonio, one of the roles that made him famous. He returns to the stage with the acrobatic aria “Ah mes amis” in Laurent Pelly’s highly acclaimed production for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. The setting for the love story of the girl Marie is moved from the Tyrolean valleys threatened by Bonaparte’s troops to the trenches of the First World War. This entertaining and poetic classic is further enriched by the presence of bel canto specialist Evelino Pidò in the orchestra pit. Look forward to Donizetti’s comic opera in October and November 2025 at La Scala in Milan and experience a fascinating performance that will win the hearts of the audience.
Story of La Fille du Régiment by Gaetano Donizetti
“La Fille du Régiment” is a comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti set in the Tyrolean Alps. The plot revolves around Marie, a girl raised by a French regiment after being found orphaned as a child. The entire regiment, especially the good-natured Sergeant Sulpice, considers Marie their daughter and she has developed a close bond with the soldiers.
Marie falls in love with a young Tyrolean, Tonio, who saves her life and later joins the regiment to be close to her. Despite the strong affection Marie and Tonio feel for each other, there are obstacles that stand in the way of their love. The regiment is initially against the union because Tonio is not French and does not belong to the regiment. However, after Tonio proves his loyalty by joining the regiment, the regiment eventually agrees to the marriage.
The situation becomes complicated when the Marchioness of Berkenfield shows up claiming that Marie is her long-lost niece. She takes Marie with her to introduce her to society and marry her off properly. Marie is unhappy about being separated from her beloved regiment and from Tonio. Under pressure from the Marquise, she must conform to the strict etiquette and expectations of aristocratic society.
On the day of Marie’s planned wedding to another man, the regiment storms into the Marquise’s castle, led by Tonio and Sulpice. The soldiers reclaim Marie and reveal her true origins as the Marquise’s daughter. In an act of rebellion against social convention, the Marquise finally declares her blessing for the marriage between Marie and Tonio, overwhelmed by the true love and unwavering bond between Marie and the regiment.
The opera ends happily with the reunion of Marie and Tonio and the regiment embracing its daughter again. The story emphasizes themes of loyalty, love, and overcoming class barriers.
