“Der Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss returns after eight years in Harry Kupfer‘s production back to La Scala in Milan. For the popular opera based on the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Kirill Petrenko will conduct the orchestra of La Scala, the chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

The opera is set in 18th-century Vienna and tells a story of love and renunciation in the 18th century. The production is set in an atmosphere of dim elegance to the masterly music of Richard Strauss. The libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is based on the novel The Adventures of Chevalier Faublas by Jean-Baptiste Louvet de Couvray and the comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac by Molières. The action of the opera Der Rosenkavalier takes place in Vienna during the first years of Maria Theresa’s reign, around 1740.
The opera tells of love and adultery, which is supposed to be covered up by disguising the lover. Intrigue and the greed of an impoverished baron lead to great confusion and confusion. In the end, the baron is chased away and love triumphs.
