Opera: Weill Triptych (Die Sieben Todsünden / Mahagonny-Songspiel / Happy End)

by Kurt Weill
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2025-05-14 ... 2025-05-30

The triptych dedicated to Kurt Weill is conducted by Riccardo Chailly and directed by Irina Brook. The production uses a minimalist scenography with discarded materials and a sea of plastic bottles. The Seven Deadly Sins and Mahagonny Songspiel become a triptych with the addition of a new production of Happy End, which presents “Surabaya Johnny” among other famous pieces (including “Alabama Song”).
Look forward to an evening of Weill with Bertolt Brecht’s biting social sarcasm.

The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins is a satirical ballet with singing in seven scenes with a prologue and epilogue.

The ballet “The Seven Deadly Sins” tells the story of Anna, who is sent by her family on a journey through various American cities to earn money. On her journey she encounters the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, anger, envy, gluttony, lust and sloth. Each city brings a new challenge and sin that Anna must overcome. She struggles internally with her own moral values and the temptations she encounters along the way. In the end, she returns home, internally torn and disillusioned after experiencing the destructive powers of the seven deadly sins.

Mahagonny Songspiel

The opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht tells the story of the city of Mahagonny, a fictional metropolis founded by three criminals. The city promises unlimited pleasure and enjoyment. Jim Mahoney and his friends come to Mahagonny to find a better life, but are quickly drawn into a world of corruption and decadence. After a hurricane, the residents are caught in a vortex of greed and debauchery. Jim is eventually executed for his inability to pay his debts. The city falls apart, and Mahagonny becomes a symbol of the destructive forces of capitalism and hedonism.

Happy End

The opera “Happy End” by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht is set in Chicago in the 1920s. The story revolves around the love between the Salvation Army worker Lillian Holiday and the gangster boss Bill Cracker. Lillian tries to reform Bill and his gang, while the gang tries to seduce Lillian and lead her astray. Despite many conflicts and misunderstandings, Lillian and Bill fall in love. The opera ends surprisingly optimistically, with the gang actually reforming and joining Lillian in supporting the Salvation Army. The moral message emphasizes the possibility of redemption and change, even in a corrupt world.
