The ballet Peer Gynt by Edward Clug is being performed for the first time at La Scala. The dramatic character of the protagonist comes from the poem by Henrik Ibsen. Edward Clug wrote a libretto from it that follows the story chronologically. The dreamlike ballet accompanies the physical and inner journey of the legendary figure of Peer Gynt from Nordic folklore. The powerful text of the great playwright and the inspiring music of Edvard Grieg result in a dynamic and coherent development of the story.
By merging the artistic worlds of Ibsen and Grieg, the audience experiences a new experience of contemporary ballet.
The Story of Peer Gynt by Edward Clug
To escape the narrowness of his life, Peer Gynt leaves his Norwegian homeland and his love Solveig at the age of 20 and goes on a journey around the world to find his own self. In search of his identity and his role in life, he throws himself into love and kidnapping adventures, he lies and dreams and loses all sense of proportion due to his greed and egocentric nature. He becomes rich through the slave trade.
At the end of his life, Peer Gynt returns to his homeland and has to realize how he has brought guilt upon himself through greed and megalomania and has disregarded the most important thing in life, the people he loves. In a famous scene, Peer compares himself to an onion that has many layers but no core.
In the final scene, Solvejg saves Peer Gynt after she has waited a lifetime for her lover to return.
Excess, restlessness and megalomania are current themes with which Henrik Ibsen confronts the audience and gives us reason to confront our life plans and our desires as well as our longings and fears.
