Story of Siegfried by Richard Wagner
The plot revolves around the young hero Siegfried, who is raised by the dwarf Mime. Mime only used him to obtain the powerful Ring of the Nibelung with Siegfried’s help. Siegfried, who knows nothing of his true origins, is the son of the Walsung couple Siegmund and Sieglinde. Mime forges a plan for Siegfried to kill the dragon Fafner, who guards the ring. But to do this, Siegfried must reforge his father’s sword, Nothung, because only this sword is strong enough to defeat Fafner.
Siegfried, who now feels his dislike for Mime and his curiosity about his own origins, reforges Nothung himself and sets off on a journey to the dragon’s hoard. On the way there, he meets a forest bird who shows him the way and gives him helpful hints. Finally, Siegfried finds the dragon Fafner and kills him in a brave fight. When he accidentally gets dragon’s blood on his lips, he can suddenly understand the language of birds. The forest bird warns him about Mime, who plans to poison Siegfried once he has the ring.
Siegfried confronts Mime and kills him after seeing through his devious plans. Now in possession of the ring and the invisibility cap, which he also found in the dragon’s hoard, he continues his journey. The forest bird leads him further to the sleeping Brünnhilde, who is surrounded by fire on a rock. Siegfried crosses the fire and awakens Brünnhilde with a kiss. Brünnhilde, a Valkyrie and daughter of Wotan, had been punished by Wotan for her disobedience and put into a deep sleep.
When Brünnhilde awakens, she and Siegfried fall in love. Brünnhilde gives up her divine immortality to be with Siegfried, and they exchange vows of love. Siegfried gives Brünnhilde the Ring of the Nibelung as a token of his love.
But their happy union is short-lived, as the fate of the gods and the power of the ring continue to work.
