Experience the timeless beauty of Vincenzo Bellini’s masterpiece “Norma”. Bellini’s exquisite score, filled with breathtaking arias and duets, beautifully captures the emotional complexity of the characters, making “Norma” an operatic masterpiece that continues to resonate with audiences around the world. The libretto is by Felice Romani and is based on a play by Alexandre Soumet. Particularly famous is Norma’s cavatina “Casta diva” in the first act. The role of Norma is considered one of the most difficult and demanding roles for a high female voice. NORMA was first performed in 1831 at La Scala in Milan and has not been performed there since 1977. Maria Callas sang Norma in 1952 and 1955. The new production is the work of the brilliant Olivier Py with Fabio Luisi at the podium. Marina Rebeka will shine in the role of Norma and Freddie De Tommaso as Pollione.
Story of Norma by Vincenzo Bellini
Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “Norma” is set in ancient Gaul during the Roman occupation. The plot revolves around the high priestess Norma, who secretly has a forbidden love affair with Pollione, a Roman proconsul. They have two children together, but Pollione has since transferred his affections to the young priestess Adalgisa.
Norma, learning of Pollione’s infidelity, vacillates between revenge and forgiveness. However, she decides to hide her feelings and make Adalgisa renounce Pollione. Adalgisa initially agrees, but when she realizes how closely Pollione and Norma are connected, she offers to flee to Rome with Pollione to save Norma’s honor.
Pollione refuses to give up Adalgisa and is captured by the Gauls when he tries to kidnap her from the temple. Norma, who has the power to spare his life or sacrifice him, finally confesses her own guilt and her love for Pollione. She is willing to sacrifice herself for the freedom of her people and publicly confesses her crimes.
In an act of self-sacrifice, she buries herself at the stake with Pollione to restore her honor and preserve the divine order. Adalgisa is left behind, deeply moved by Norma’s sacrifice and her sincere love for Pollione.
The opera ends tragically, with the deaths of Norma and Pollione, leaving a message of honor, love and self-sacrifice. Bellini’s music emphasizes the emotional turmoil and the inner conflicts of the characters, especially in Norma’s famous arias, which reveal her deep feelings and complex personality.
