The opera Falstaff is the last opera by Giuseppe Verdi. It was premiered in 1893 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The libretto by Arrigo Boito is based on the comedy “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and scenes from the plays of Henry IV by William Shakespeare. Falstaff was Verdi’s second comic opera after the first, “King for a Day”, was unsuccessful.
Falstaff will be performed in the historical production “Potal” by Giorgio Strehler and Ezio Frigerio, which was created for the opening of the 1980-1981 La Scala season. This time the setting is the farms of the Italian Padana. Daniele Gatti will conduct the opera Falstaff.
Story of Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi
The lascivious and fat soldier Falstaff is broke and tries to get his hands on the money of rich women through flattery and deceit. They have seen through Falstaff’s intentions and try to outwit him, which in turn leads to jealousy and confusion. At the end there is a masquerade with a double wedding, which causes even more confusion.
The action of the opera Falstaff with the adventures of the Merry Wives of Windsor is set in the sun-drenched farms of the Padana, the lower Po Plain.
