Opera: Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose)

by Francesco Filidei
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2025-04-27 ... 2025-05-10

Experience a world premiere at La Scala with the opera “The Name of the Rose”. The well-known novel by Umberto Eco is being musically adapted by the composer Francesco Filidei . “The Name of the Rose” will be performed at La Scala in April/May 2025 under the direction of Ingo Metzmacher and directed by Damiano Michieletto. The opera is being produced jointly with the Opéra de Paris and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.
The Teatro alla Scala, together with the Opéra National de Paris, commissioned this new opera from the composer Francesco Filidei, which will be produced in an Italian and a French version for the premieres in Milan and Paris. It is already the third opera by Francesco Filidei after “Giordano Bruno” and “L’inondation”.

The Name of The Rose

The plot that Eco describes takes place in 1327 in a Cluniac monastery, where a series of murders occurs.
Umberto Eco took the story from the writings of the imaginary Franciscan monk Adso da Melk and developed it into a detective story. Medieval life is described in detail and in an exciting way in the novel.
Francesco Filidei’s task is to analyze the novel’s narrative structure in order to translate it into a musical dramaturgy.

Eco said that one inspiration for his novel came from Mahler’s symphonies (e.g. the Scherzo from Mahler’s Second) and described his book as having the structure of a comic melodrama with long recitatives and large arias.
Filidei combines Gregorian melodies with a sequence of arias and recitatives, thus creating the transition from words to music.
