Story of Evgenij Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
The opera “Evgenij Onegin” tells the story of Tatiana, a young, dreamy woman living on a rural estate in the Russian countryside. One day, the wealthy and sophisticated Evgenij Onegin visits the estate, accompanied by his friend Lensky, a young poet engaged to Tatiana’s lively sister Olga. Tatiana falls instantly in love with Onegin. In a stormy night, she writes him a passionate letter confessing her love.
Onegin receives the letter and is initially moved by Tatiana’s sincerity. However, at their next meeting, he politely but coldly explains that he does not believe in marriage and cannot return her love. Tatiana is heartbroken but accepts his decision and withdraws.
Later, at a ball for Tatiana’s name day, Onegin grows bored and begins flirting with Olga to pass the time. This enrages Lensky, who jealously challenges Onegin to a duel. Despite wanting to avoid the conflict, Onegin feels compelled to accept the challenge to preserve his honor. The next morning, the two men meet for the duel, and in an impulsive moment, Onegin kills Lensky.
Years later, Onegin returns to Russia and attends a ball in St. Petersburg. There he meets Tatiana again, who is now married to a wealthy and respected prince. Onegin realizes how much he loves Tatiana and how foolish he had been. He writes her a letter confessing his love and begging for forgiveness.
Tatiana reads the letter and is torn between her old feelings for Onegin and her loyalty to her husband. Finally, she meets with Onegin and tearfully explains that while she still loves him, she cannot and will not leave her marriage. She asks him to leave and never return. Onegin realizes that he has lost his chance at true happiness and is left alone and desperate.
The opera ends with a profound sense of tragedy, as the main characters are separated by their own actions and decisions. Onegin is left with the bitter realization that he has lost the love of his life, while Tatiana must live with the pain of choosing between duty and passion.
