The ballet season at La Scala in Milan starts with the ballet The Nutcracker. It is also a homage to the great dancer and choreographer Rudolf Nureyev . Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s fairytale ballet The Nutcracker premiered in Saint Petersburg in 1892. The popular ballet is a regular fixture at many theaters, especially around Christmas time. Nureyev had developed his own choreography for La Scala in Milan.

The libretto by Alexandre Dumas is based on a French version of the fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
