Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” closes the season at Teatro alla Scala from October 17 to November 7, 2025. Directed by Robert Carsen, it features the La Scala debut of Alexander Soddy. Known for his work at Covent Garden and the Met, Soddy brings fresh interpretation to this melancholic masterpiece.
Story of Così fan Tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The opera “Così fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is about an insightful experiment on fidelity and the unpredictability of love. The action begins in Naples, where the cynical philosopher Don Alfonso bets the young officers Ferrando and Guglielmo about the fidelity of their fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Don Alfonso claims that all women are unfaithful, and the two officers accept the bet. Don Alfonso plans to test the women’s fidelity by having the men disguise themselves as strangers and try to steal each other’s fiancées.
Ferrando and Guglielmo leave, ostensibly for a military mission, but return disguised as Albanian noblemen. At first, Fiordiligi and Dorabella are steadfast and resist the advances. With the help of the shrewd maid Despina, who has taken Don Alfonso into her confidence, the men intensify their efforts. Despina disguises herself as a notary and a doctor, among other things, to aid the deception.
As the experiment progresses, the two women begin to yield to the advances of the supposed strangers. Dorabella eventually exchanges her medallion, which contains Ferrando’s picture, for a gift from Guglielmo and gives in to his advances. Fiordiligi, on the other hand, resists longer but eventually succumbs to Ferrando’s charms.
The comedy reaches its climax when Don Alfonso and Despina arrange a double wedding between the disguised officers and the deceived women. Just before the ceremony is completed, Ferrando and Guglielmo return in their original identities and expose the whole deception. An emotional confrontation ensues, with the men expressing their disappointment and the women their shame at the infidelity.
In the end, the bet is dissolved, and all the characters acknowledge human weakness and the complexity of love. The couple forgive each other, and the opera ends with the realization that life is unpredictable and that human feelings can constantly change. Don Alfonso triumphs with his cynical worldview, but the characters gain a deeper insight into the nature of love and fidelity.
