The Opening Night of the Season 2024/2025 of La Scala – A Glimpse Behind the Scenes
Finally, the program for the 2025 season at La Scala in Milan has been published.
The opening night is every year on December 7th, the feast day of Saint Ambrose. It promises to be a grand event featuring musical elite Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, and Ludovic Tézier, under the musical direction of Riccardo Chailly and Leo Muscato. The season premiere on 7 December 2024 will be the major highlight at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
La Scala’s season 2025 will kick off with a work by Giuseppe Verdi, this time with “La Forza del Destino,” continuing the tradition of past years, which have featured Verdi operas such as “Don Carlo” (2024), “Macbeth” (2022), “Attila” (2020), and “Giovanna d’Arco” (2016).
Another Verdi opera on stage will be Falstaff from January 16th to February 7th and Rigoletto from October 7th to 28th, 2025.
Highlights for Wagner fans:
The Wagner cycle of the “Ring of the Nibelung” will continue. Following its start in October and November 2024 with “Das Rheingold“, it will be continued in 2025 (5th to 23 February) with “Die Walküre” under the direction of David McVicar and the conductor Christian Thielemann.
And something completely new is in the works:
La Scala has commissioned Francesco Filidei to compose an opera based on Umberto Eco’s novel “The Name of the Rose.” The premiere is scheduled for April 27th, 2025 under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher. Damiano Michieletto will direct, with baritone Lucas Meachem as “William of Baskerville” and mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsay as “Adso of Melk en travesti.”
After 48 years, Bellini’s opera “Norma” (from the 27th of June to the 17th of July) will also return to La Scala.
