With Richard Wagner’s monumental opera Götterdämmerung, the “Ring of the Nibelung” reaches its dramatic climax. In this final chapter of the tetralogy, a tragedy of epic proportions unfolds, where love, power, betrayal, and destruction are inextricably linked. Composed in a prologue and three acts, Wagner’s music drama captivates with its emotional depth, musical sophistication, and mythological scope. The February 2026 performances in Milan offer a rare opportunity to experience this masterpiece in a new production by Sir David McVicar at one of the world’s most renowned opera houses.
Teatro alla Scala, inaugurated in 1778 and internationally revered as the cradle of operatic art, is a cultural gem in the elegant heart of Milan. Its magnificent architecture, exceptional acoustics, and illustrious history make La Scala an unforgettable experience for music lovers from around the globe. A visit to Milan can be ideally combined with excursions to the northern Italian lakes or the cultural treasures of Lombardy, such as Bergamo, Como, or Cremona – a musical journey at the highest level.
The performances of Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung in March 2026 are part of the full Ring of the Nibelung cycle by Richard Wagner, staged at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. These productions can currently only be booked as a complete package including all four operas. Individual tickets are not available at this time. Remaining seats for selected performances may be released at a later date, depending on availability. This cycle offers a rare opportunity for music lovers to experience Wagner’s monumental work in its entirety at one of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.
Story of Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner
In the final part of the Ring, the tragic fate of Siegfried and Brünnhilde is sealed. The Norns, goddesses of fate, foretell doom. Siegfried leaves Brünnhilde in search of new adventures but, under the influence of a magic potion, loses his memory and becomes entangled in a sinister plot at the court of the Gibichungs. Gunther and his sister Gutrune, manipulated by their half-brother Hagen, draw Siegfried into a fatal plan. Brünnhilde, betrayed and wounded, joins Hagen’s quest for revenge, which culminates in Siegfried’s murder. When Brünnhilde learns the truth, she sacrifices herself to break the curse of the ring. In a grand finale, accompanied by Wagner’s iconic closing music, the world of the gods goes up in flames – an ending that can be read as a visionary allegory of human hubris, redemption, and renewal. Götterdämmerung is not just the final chord of a musical cycle, but a milestone in European cultural history.
