Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Æneas,” the first great masterpiece of English opera, makes a highly anticipated arrival at La Scala. Blending Venetian and French operatic styles into an entirely unique Baroque language, this profound work balances regal tragedy with the grotesque interventions of witches. To translate the complex forms of English pre-classical theater into a striking contemporary vision, La Scala has entrusted this new production to the multi-talented Marcos Morau, making his house directorial debut.
On the podium, maestro Gianluca Capuano brings his exceptional mastery of early music. The exceptional cast features Emily D’Angelo as a deeply moving Dido, Alessio Arduini as the torn Æneas, and countertenor Carlo Vistoli in the unusual role of the Witch.
Plot of Dido and Æneas
In Carthage, Queen Dido is consumed by grief, fearing her love for the Trojan hero Æneas will compromise her royal duty. Her sister Belinda encourages the romance, and when Æneas arrives, the couple celebrates their union. However, their happiness is short-lived. A malicious Sorceress and her coven of witches plot Carthage’s downfall out of sheer hatred. They conjure a storm to disrupt a royal hunt, and an evil spirit disguised as Mercury commands Æneas to abandon Dido to fulfill his destiny to found Rome. Torn but obedient, Æneas prepares to sail. Dido, heartbroken and refusing a lover who even considered leaving her, dismisses him. As his ships depart, she sings her devastatingly beautiful farewell to Belinda before sinking into ultimate despair and taking her own life.
