After a long absence from La Scala, the opera returns in a formidable new production directed by Chiara Muti and conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa in his house debut. The demanding vocal roles, famous for their emotional depth and technical brilliance, are brought to life by an exceptional cast including Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Juan Diego Flórez, promising a deeply moving theatrical experience.
Plot of Anna Bolena
Set in 1536 England, King Henry VIII (Enrico) seeks to end his marriage to Anna Bolena because he has secretly fallen in love with her lady-in-waiting, Giovanna Seymour. To justify a divorce and Anna’s execution, the King orchestrates a cruel trap. He recalls Anna’s first love, Riccardo Percy, from exile, hoping to compromise the Queen’s virtue. Through a series of misunderstandings and deliberate manipulations, Percy and Anna are discovered in an apparently incriminating situation. Despite Giovanna’s guilt-ridden pleas for mercy and Anna’s protestations of innocence, the ruthless King condemns his wife to death. In prison, confronting her execution, Anna slips into madness. She revisits happier memories before regaining her dignity, forgiving her betrayers, and walking sublimely to the scaffold.
