After ten years, Teatro alla Scala presents a new production of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, under the baton of Simone Young and Alexander Soddy.

Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen is one of the most ambitious works in opera history. Composed between 1848 and 1874, the cycle includes four operas: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Inspired by Norse and German mythology, Wagner created a “total work of art” (Gesamtkunstwerk) blending music, poetry, and philosophy. The full cycle premiered in 1876 at the specially built Bayreuth Festival Theatre. The story revolves around a cursed ring forged from the stolen Rhine gold, granting power over the world – and bringing ruin to all who seek it.

Das Rheingold introduces the conflict: the dwarf Alberich steals the gold and crafts the ring. The gods, led by Wotan, desire its power.
In Die Walküre, Wotan’s daughter Brünnhilde defies him to protect the forbidden love of Siegmund and Sieglinde.
Siegfried follows the fearless hero who slays the dragon Fafner and awakens Brünnhilde with a kiss.
Götterdämmerung brings betrayal, Siegfried’s death, Brünnhilde’s self-sacrifice, and the fiery end of the gods – paving the way for renewal.

Wagner’s Ring is a profound exploration of power, love, destiny, and redemption, and continues to captivate audiences around the world.
