Vincenzo Bellini’s final masterpiece, “I Puritani,” represents an authentic poetic manifesto of Italian Bel Canto. Due to the extreme vocal difficulties of the roles originally written for legends Rubini and Grisi, the opera is rarely performed. Absent from La Scala since 1971, its return firmly reaffirms Milan as the true home of the bel canto tradition.
This spectacular new production features conductor Fabio Luisi, a master of the repertoire’s delicate expressive codes, paired with the intense, visually striking direction of Davide Livermore. After an extensive search, tenor Galeano Salas tackles the forbidding role of Arturo, starring alongside the brilliant Adela Zaharia as Elvira and Mattia Olivieri as Riccardo.
Plot of I Puritani
Set in 17th-century England during the Civil War, Elvira, daughter of a Puritan commander, is overjoyed when her father allows her to marry her true love, the Royalist Arturo, instead of her Puritan suitor Riccardo. However, on their wedding day, Arturo discovers that Queen Enrichetta is imprisoned in the fortress and faces execution. Driven by loyalty, Arturo helps the Queen escape by disguising her in Elvira’s bridal veil. Believing herself betrayed and abandoned at the altar, Elvira loses her sanity and slips into deep madness. Arturo is condemned to death in his absence. When he secretly returns to explain his innocence to Elvira, her mind clears, but they are quickly captured by the Puritans. Just as Arturo faces execution, news arrives of a general amnesty, permanently restoring peace, Elvira’s sanity, and the lovers’ future.
