Ballet: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

After a ten-year absence and celebrating over a hundred performances of international success, La Scala’s Ballet Company proudly brings back its acclaimed production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Originally premiered in Europe in 2003 with breathtaking sets and costumes by Luisa Spinatelli, George Balanchine’s 1962 masterpiece enjoys a brilliant rebirth on the Milanese stage.

Balanchine geniusly conceived two ballets in one: the first act dynamically narrates Shakespeare’s famous comedy, while the second act unfolds as a grand, pure divertissement celebrating geometric perfection. Featuring the full company, academy students, and live singers, this magical production offers a dazzling feast of classical dance before the summer break.

In a magical, moonlit forest, the fairy king Oberon and queen Titania argue, prompting Oberon to command the mischievous sprite Puck to fetch a magical flower that induces love. Puck uses the potion on the sleeping Titania, causing her to fall in love with Bottom, a weaver transformed into a donkey. Meanwhile, two mortal couples—Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius—wander the woods, entangled in a web of unrequited affection. Puck’s clumsy attempts to fix their love lives with the potion create chaotic, hilarious confusion. Eventually, Oberon orders the spells reversed. The lovers wake up reunited with their true partners, and Titania reconciles with her king. The second act shifts from narrative chaos to absolute order, celebrating the couples’ grand court wedding through a magnificent, pure classical divertissement.
