Ballet by Pierre Lacotte
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2027-11-05 ... 2027-11-24

Teatro alla Scala closes its ballet season with Pierre Lacotte’s spectacular production of “Paquita.” A legendary specialist in reviving the Romantic repertoire, Lacotte rescued this historic title, breaking away from the traditional “ballet blanc” to deliver a realistic story with a vivid, flesh-and-blood heroine.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of 19th-century Spain, the production features exquisite sets and costumes created especially for La Scala by Luisa Spinatelli. Under the baton of Paul Connelly, the La Scala Ballet Company and Orchestra are joined by the talented students of the Academy’s Ballet School. This thrilling restaging offers an exhilarating showcase of pure technical virtuosity, grand lyricism, and non-stop choreographic brilliance.

Set in Spain during the Napoleonic occupation, the story follows Paquita, a young gypsy girl who unknown to all was abducted from a noble family as a child. She saves the life of a young French officer, Lucien d’Hervilly, who has been targeted by a Spanish governor’s deadly assassination plot. Through this brave act, Paquita and Lucien fall deeply in love, but their vast difference in social standing makes a marriage impossible. However, during a grand elegant ball, the intricate plot unravels when Paquita discovers a golden medallion that reveals her true identity as Lucien’s first cousin and a high-born noblewoman. With her aristocratic lineage restored, the obstacles vanish, and their troubled romance culminates in a magnificent wedding celebration, marked by the world-famous Grand Pas.
