Anton Bruckner worked on his 9th Symphony until his death in 1896, dedicating it “to the beloved God.” For a long time, the work was performed only in three movements, with the Adagio understood as a transcendental, peaceful farewell. However, Bruckner left behind extensive sketches for a massive fourth movement—a finale intended to weave together all the themes of the symphony.
This concert utilizes the edition by Leopold Nowak, supplemented by the completion of the Finale by N. Samale, J.A. Phillips, B.-G. Cohrs, and G. Mazzucca (revised by J.A. Phillips). This scholarly reconstruction allows the audience to experience Bruckner’s symphonic architecture in its full, four-movement glory for the first time in Italy.
Riccardo Chailly, a distinguished expert in the Austro-German symphonic tradition, leads the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala through this complex score. From the mystical primal sounds of the first movement to the demonic Scherzo and the radiant, now-reconstructed Finale, this evening promises to be a spiritual and intellectual journey to the outer limits of symphonic music.
