The San Carlo Theater was built in 1737 and is the oldest opera house in the world.
The Italian opera temple San Carlo is a symbol of the city of Naples. In the central position between the famous Piazza del Plebiscito and the Gallery Umberto I you find this historical opera palace. The Teatro San Carlo was built in 1737, by the will of King Charles III of Bourbon with a strong intention to give the city a new theater that represented the royal power.
It’s date of birth anticipates the Teatro alla Scala in Milan by 41 years and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice by 55 years. The project was entrusted to the architect Giovanni Antonio Medrano, a Spanish Colonel Brigadier stationed in Naples. Medrano’s design envisaged a hall 28.6 meters long and 22.5 meters wide, with 184 boxes, including the proscenium ones, arranged in six tiers, plus a royal box capable of accommodating ten people, for a total of 1379 seats.
We often receive questions about the dress code. Please allow us to give suggestions. It’s primarily about making you feel comfortable and not out of place. There is no strict dress code.
Visiting the Theatre is an emotional experience and you are sitting in the best places the house has to offer. We recommend elegant evening wear, gentlemen are well advised in the Smoking or suit with bow tie. Absolute minimum is slags and jacket. We recommend an elegant dress to the ladies, it may, but does not have to be a long dress. You are also well dressed in elegant trousers. You are not rejected if he comes without a tie and she wears flat shoes, by no means. But you may feel better if you can empathize and be confident with yourself.
Photography is permitted during breaks, but strictly prohibited during the performance. The photos may only be used privately, but may not be published or posted. Not even if no people can be seen on it. The laws are quite different here in Italy. You can read this on the internet under the heading “Panorama Freedom.”
