Experience the heartbreaking story of Violetta Valéry, a glamorous Parisian courtesan whose love for Alfredo Germont shatters against societal conventions and prejudices. Verdi’s score is an emotional fireworks display: ranging from lavish parties to intimate duets, to soul-searching, unforgettable arias. This production, which has captivated audiences since its 1990 premiere, returns to the stage with its opulent sets by Dante Ferretti and exquisite costumes by Gabriella Pescucci. Under the baton of the accomplished conductor Michele Gamba and featuring an outstanding cast led by the charismatic Nadine Sierra as Violetta, this evening promises to be a deeply moving and unforgettable event that showcases Verdi’s genius in full splendor.
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is not merely an opera house; it is a living monument to musical history, a stage where legends were born and continue to thrive. Since its opening in 1778, it has hosted the world’s greatest voices and most daring productions. Step into this historic edifice, and you’ll immediately feel the aura of countless triumphant premieres and unforgettable evenings. The majestic architecture, the red velvet, and the gleaming gold of the boxes create an atmosphere of unparalleled elegance. Yet, beyond the visual splendor, it’s La Scala’s legendary acoustics that carry every note of Verdi’s emotional score with a clarity and resonance that deeply stir the soul. Here, where Maria Callas once sang, the past merges with the present in a unique musical experience that will enthrall you.

Giuseppe Verdi’s “La traviata” (The Fallen Woman) is an opera in three acts with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel “La Dame aux Camélias” and premiered on March 6, 1853, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Although its premiere was initially met with a lukewarm reception, “La traviata” quickly became one of the most popular and frequently performed operas worldwide.

The story is set in Paris and its surroundings around 1850 and tells the tragic tale of Violetta Valéry, a famous and sought-after courtesan. Violetta leads a life of extravagance but secretly suffers from a serious illness. At a soirée, she meets the young Alfredo Germont, who has long admired her in secret. Unlike Violetta’s superficial admirers, Alfredo shows genuine love and care, which deeply touches Violetta. She falls in love with him and decides to abandon her former life to live with him in the countryside.

Their happiness is abruptly shattered, however, when Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, appears and asks Violetta to leave Alfredo. He fears that the relationship will jeopardize his family’s reputation and his daughter’s impending marriage. Violetta sacrifices her love for Alfredo’s family honor and returns to Paris under the pretext that she has grown tired of country life, which deeply wounds Alfredo and leads him to publicly insult Violetta. In a further act of humiliation, Alfredo throws money at her at a party to pay her for her “services.” Violetta’s health rapidly deteriorates. Lying on her deathbed, Giorgio Germont reveals the truth about Violetta’s sacrifice to Alfredo. Alfredo rushes to her, but it is too late. Violetta dies in his arms, a victim of societal conventions and a love that was not allowed to be. The opera is renowned for its psychological depth, its realistic characters, and Verdi’s masterful musical portrayal of human emotions.

A blessing and a challenge in the programming of every major opera house, "La traviata" holds a special place in La Scala’s history, marked by the legendary 1953 production conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini, directed by Luchino Visconti, and starring Maria Callas. That iconic interpretation seemed untouchable until 1990, when Riccardo Muti commissioned a new, lavish production from director Liliana Cavani, with sets by Dante Ferretti and costumes by Gabriella Pescucci, featuring an all-young cast.
