Giuseppe Verdi’s “Macbeth” holds a legendary place in the performance history of Teatro alla Scala. As the season’s second Shakespearean masterpiece guided by Music Director Myung-Whun Chung, this highly anticipated production features the celebrated baritone Luca Salsi in the title role. It also marks the thrilling La Scala debut of Anastasia Bartoli, a rising star of the Italian opera scene.
Renowned director Barrie Kosky presents his first Milanese staging—a critically acclaimed production from Zurich. Kosky strips the drama down to a striking, minimalist world of shadows and darkness, focusing the audience’s entire attention on the raw psychological power of the human voice and Verdi’s intense, dramatic score.
Plot of Macbeth
Returning from war, the Scottish generals Macbeth and Banco encounter a coven of witches who prophesy that Macbeth will become King of Scotland and Banco the father of kings. Driven by blind ambition and fiercely urged on by his ruthless wife, Macbeth assassinates King Duncan to seize the throne. Plagued by guilt and fear of the second prophecy, the royal couple orders the murder of Banco and his son, though the boy escapes. At a state banquet, Macbeth is terrified by the ghost of Banco, exposing his unraveling sanity to the court. As tyrants, the Macbeths plunge Scotland into terror until the noble Macduff leads a rebellion. While Lady Macbeth, consumed by guilt, succumbs to sleepwalking and death, Macbeth faces his destiny. He is slain in battle by Macduff, restoring peace to the bleeding realm.
