Experience an evening of charm and melody with L’elisir d’amore , Gaetano Donizetti’s enchanting Bel Canto masterpiece! From September 5 to 16, 2026, the venerable Teatro alla Scala Milano opens its doors for a captivating new production of this charming opera. Join the shy Nemorino as he tries to win the love of the beautiful Adina with the help of a supposed love potion – an elixir that turns out to be ordinary Bordeaux, but still leads to hilarious complications. Donizetti’s music sparkles with wit, lyrical beauty, and unforgettable melodies, from Nemorino’s famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima” to the lively ensembles that warm the heart and bring laughter. This “Melodramma giocoso” (joyful melodrama) is a feast for the senses, full of charm, romance, and timeless comedy, delighting audiences of all ages. It’s a perfect choice for those who want to experience opera with lightness and emotion, staged by the talented forces of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is far more than just an opera house; it’s an icon of musical culture, a place where the history of opera is reflected in every golden box and every velvet seat. Since its opening in 1778, it has hosted the greatest voices and the most brilliant productions, becoming a living monument to artistic excellence. The interior of the house captivates with its opulent furnishings, ranging from the elegantly curved tiers to the iconic chandelier, creating an atmosphere of incomparable splendor. But the true heart of La Scala lies in its acoustics: renowned for their crystal-clear purity and warm, enveloping resonance, they unfold every note of Donizetti’s sparkling score in all its emotional depth and comedic brilliance. Here, in these hallowed halls, every opera visit becomes a truly sublime experience that touches the soul and remains in memory long after the final bow.

Gaetano Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” (The Elixir of Love) is a “Melodramma giocoso” (joyful melodrama) in two acts. The opera premiered on May 12, 1832, at the Teatro della Cannobiana in Milan and was an immediate and lasting success, making it one of Donizetti’s most frequently performed operas. The libretto was written by Felice Romani, who adapted it in remarkably short order from Eugène Scribe’s libretto for Daniel-François-Esprit Auber’s opera “Le philtre.”

The story is set in a small Italian village in the Basque Country during the 19th century and revolves around rural love and trickery. The young and shy farmer Nemorino is desperately in love with the wealthy and educated landowner Adina, but he lacks the courage to confess his feelings to her. Adina, aware of his affection, plays with him and flirts instead with the conceited Sergeant Belcore, who is also seeking her hand in marriage.

When the traveling quack Dr. Dulcamara arrives in the village offering a “love potion,” Nemorino sees his chance. Dulcamara sells him a bottle of ordinary Bordeaux wine as a miraculous elixir, claiming it will take effect after 24 hours – just long enough for Dulcamara to disappear. Nemorino drinks the wine and becomes overly confident, which annoys Adina. To provoke Nemorino, she agrees to marry Belcore immediately. Nemorino urgently needs to buy more “elixir” but has no money. He therefore enlists in the military to receive an advance. Meanwhile, a rumor spreads that Nemorino’s rich uncle has died and left him a fortune, causing the village girls to suddenly vie for Nemorino’s attention. Nemorino believes the love potion is finally working. Adina recognizes the true nature of his love, becomes jealous of the other girls’ attention, and sings the famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima.” In the end, Adina chooses Nemorino, and Dr. Dulcamara extols his love potion as a universal remedy for all romantic woes.
