Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2026-06-26 ... 2026-07-17

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Lucia di Lammermoor , Gaetano Donizetti’s immortal Bel Canto masterpiece, which reveals the human soul in all its fragility and passion! From June 26 to July 17, 2026, the venerable Teatro alla Scala Milano invites you to witness a profound new production of this tragic opera. Experience the gripping story of young Lucia, trapped between love, duty, and madness, culminating in one of the most iconic mad scenes in operatic history. Donizetti’s music is a gift to the ears: it oscillates between lyrical grace and dramatic vehemence, with virtuosic arias that demand the highest technical skill from the human voice, and moving ensembles that break the heart. This production, masterfully capturing the confluence of Italian melodrama and the dark romanticism of Walter Scott’s novel, promises an unforgettable emotional journey under the baton of the brilliant conductor Speranza Scappucci and the direction of the experienced Yannis Kokkos. Look forward to an exquisite cast, including Rosa Feola as Lucia, Pene Pati as Edgardo, and Boris Pinkhasovich as Enrico, who will bring Donizetti’s complex characters to life with depth and nuance.
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is not just an opera house; it is an institution that has pulsed as the heart of the operatic world since its opening in 1778. Step into this historic building and immediately feel the aura of countless legendary performances and groundbreaking premieres. The opulent design of the boxes, the velvet coverings, and the warm glow of the majestic chandelier create an ambiance of timeless elegance. But beyond the magnificent aesthetics, it is La Scala’s legendary acoustics that carry every musical detail – from Donizetti’s most delicate melody to the most powerful forte – into the auditorium with perfect clarity. Here, opera history has been written, and here, the past merges with the present in a unique musical experience.

Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” is one of the most famous Italian Bel Canto operas in three acts, based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel “The Bride of Lammermoor.” The opera premiered on September 26, 1835, in Naples (Teatro San Carlo) and was an instant success, solidifying Donizetti’s reputation as a leading opera composer of his time. The plot is set in late 17th-century Scotland and tells the tragic story of young Lucia Ashton, who has secretly fallen in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, the sworn enemy of her brother, Lord Enrico Ashton.

Enrico, whose family is financially ruined, plans to marry Lucia to the wealthy Lord Arturo Bucklaw for political and financial reasons, to save his fortune and solidify his position. He intercepts Edgardo’s letters and forges proof of his infidelity to force Lucia into marrying Arturo. Lucia, desperate and mentally unstable, reluctantly agrees to the marriage. During the wedding festivities, Edgardo appears and curses Lucia and all present upon seeing the marriage document. Lucia’s mind breaks under the pressure.

The famous mad scene in the third act, often considered the pinnacle of the Bel Canto repertoire, shows Lucia in her state of delirium after having murdered Arturo on her wedding night. She fantasizes about her love for Edgardo and her impending marriage to him. At the end of the opera, Edgardo learns of Lucia’s death and, in his despair, takes his own life in the Lammermoor graveyard to be reunited with his beloved Lucia in heaven. The opera is renowned for its dramatic intensity, its beautiful melodies, and the virtuosic coloratura that musically underscores Lucia’s inner conflicts and ultimate descent into madness.

  • LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR | La Scala Milan • June 26, 2026

Teatro alla Scala, Milano Via Filodrammatici, 2, Milan, (MI), Italy

A milestone in the history of musical theatre, "Lucia di Lammermoor" was born from the encounter between the sensibility of Italian melodrama and the gothic atmosphere of Walter Scott’s novel. Director Yannis Kokkos, who originally staged this production in 2003 under the baton of Riccardo Chailly, views the opera as a ruthless hunt in which the victim is driven toward the depths of madness—evoked by Donizetti through the ethereal sound of the glass harmonica. The revival is entrusted to Speranza Scappucci, a conductor well-versed in bel canto, who made her La Scala debut with Bellini’s "I Capuleti e i Montecchi." The cast features distinguished voices: alongside the leads—Rosa Feola as Lucia, Pene Pati as Edgardo, and Boris Pinkhasovich as Enrico—Michele Pertusi shines as a commanding Raimondo.
