Faust

by Charles Gounod
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2026-10-20 ... 2026-11-08

Experience the profound and melodic power of Faust , Charles Gounod’s operatic masterpiece that brings the eternal questions of knowledge, temptation, and redemption to the stage! From October 20 to November 8, 2026, this dramatic work returns to the historic Teatro alla Scala Milano in an exciting new production. Dive into Goethe’s famous narrative, which Gounod transformed into a French operatic jewel with unforgettable arias, passionate duets, and imposing choruses. From Mephistopheles’ alluring promises to Marguerite’s tragic story, “Faust” captivates with its emotional depth and musical brilliance. This new production, a co-production with renowned European houses, promises a fresh and visually stunning interpretation, conducted by the rising Daniele Rustioni. With a stellar cast, including the acclaimed Marina Rebeka as Marguerite and the charismatic Alex Esposito as Mephistopheles, this operatic evening is an absolute must for all lovers of the French repertoire and dramatically compelling narratives.

The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is not merely an opera house; it is a monument of immense cultural significance, whose walls have breathed stories and melodies since 1778. Step inside, and you’ll immediately be enveloped by the historic ambiance that echoes through every magnificent detail of its gilded boxes and grand auditorium. It’s a place where past and present merge in a harmonious dance, where the legacy of great artists meets the brilliance of contemporary performances. The house’s renowned acoustics are an experience in themselves, carrying every nuance of Gounod’s complex score with a clarity and presence that is virtually unmatched. An evening at La Scala is therefore far more than just attending an opera; it’s an immersive journey into the heart of Italy’s artistic excellence that will captivate you.

Charles Gounod’s opera “Faust” is an “Opéra” in five acts with a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. It is loosely based on Goethe’s drama “Faust Part I” and premiered on March 19, 1859, at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. Originally conceived as an Opéra comique with spoken dialogue, it was later reworked into a Grand opéra with ballet segments and recitatives, achieving worldwide fame in this form.

The plot begins with the aging scholar Faust, who is weary of life and on the verge of suicide. He laments the limitations of human knowledge and summons the devil. Mephistopheles appears and offers Faust youth, love, and knowledge in exchange for his soul. Faust initially hesitates but agrees when a vision of the young and beautiful Marguerite appears to him.

Rejuvenated and full of new energy, Faust returns to the world, accompanied by Mephistopheles, who aids him in his seductions. They meet Marguerite, and Faust is immediately captivated by her innocence and beauty. Through Mephistopheles’ intrigues and gifts, particularly the famous Jewel Song, Faust wins Marguerite’s heart. Meanwhile, Marguerite’s brother Valentin, a soldier, attempts to protect her honor but falls in a duel against Faust, arranged by Mephistopheles. Before he dies, Valentin curses his sister.

Marguerite becomes pregnant and is ostracized by society. Her despair culminates when she kills her child and is imprisoned for it. Faust, plagued by remorse, tries to free her with Mephistopheles’ help. Marguerite, however, refuses to sacrifice her soul to Mephistopheles and finds solace in faith. In the finale, her soul is carried to heaven by angels, while Mephistopheles drags Faust to damnation. The opera is celebrated for its rich melodicity, dramatic impact, and psychological portrayal of its characters.
