Rudolf Nureyev
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2026-07-02 ... 2026-07-16

Experience the pure, overflowing joy of Don Quixote , Rudolf Nureyev’s iconic ballet that has captivated audiences worldwide since its premiere! From July 2 to 16, 2026, this flagship production of the Teatro alla Scala Milano returns to the stage to enchant you with its exhilarating energy and the warm colors of a captivating staging. Nureyev’s “Don Quixote” is a ballet feast brimming with freshness, joy, and dazzling virtuosity, transporting you to a lively, sun-drenched Spain. Experience a world full of fiery gypsy dances, passionate fandangos, proud matadors, and whimsical windmills that transform the stage into a colorful spectacle. To Ludwig Minkus’ catchy music, the adventures of the titular knight and his loyal squire Sancho Panza unfold, serving as a charming backdrop for a sparkling love story. La Scala’s Ballet Company, accompanied by its Orchestra and the talented students of the Ballet School, promises an evening of spirited dances, amusing secondary characters, and breathtaking leading roles that will enthrall you.
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is more than just an opera house; it’s a monument of immense cultural resonance, whose walls have breathed stories and melodies since 1778. Step inside, and you’ll immediately be enveloped by the historic ambiance that echoes through every ornate detail of its gilded boxes and grand auditorium. It’s a place where past and present merge in a harmonious dance, where the legacy of great artists meets the brilliance of contemporary performances. The house’s renowned acoustics are an experience in themselves, carrying every nuance of Minkus’ exhilarating score and the lightness of the dancers’ movements with a clarity and presence that is virtually unmatched. An evening at La Scala, therefore, is far more than just attending a ballet; it’s an immersive journey into the very heart of Italy’s artistic excellence.

Rudolf Nureyev’s ballet “Don Quixote” is based on Marius Petipa’s classical choreography and Ludwig Minkus’ music. It premiered in 1966 for the Vienna State Opera Ballet and has since become a staple in the repertoire of many major ballet companies worldwide. In contrast to its literary origin, Miguel de Cervantes’ novel of the same name, the ballet focuses less on the philosophical adventures of the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance and more on a lively romance inspired by Don Quixote’s idealism.

The plot unfolds in three acts and revolves around the young, spirited Kitri and her beloved Basilio, a poor barber. Kitri’s father, the innkeeper Lorenzo, however, opposes this union and plans to marry his daughter to the wealthy nobleman Gamache. Into this love drama stumble Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza. Don Quixote, who in his fantasy sees his ideal lady, Dulcinea, everywhere, mistakes Kitri for his ideal beloved and tries to help her. Through a series of turbulent events, misunderstandings, and comical escapades, including an encounter with windmills and a visit to a gypsy camp, Kitri and Basilio try to win Lorenzo’s approval for their marriage.

The highlight of the ballet is the spectacular wedding celebration, featuring the famous Grand Pas de Deux of Kitri and Basilio with its breathtaking pirouettes and leaps. Don Quixote plays a more observational and often comical role, supporting the lovers in their endeavors while pursuing his own idealistic visions. The ballet is known for its vibrant Spanish atmosphere, colorful costumes, captivating music, and demanding yet playful choreography that combines technical brilliance with humor and heartfelt warmth.
