Giselle

Music by Adolphe Adam, choreography Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2026-10-01... 2026-10-23

Be captivated by the timeless beauty of Giselle , the quintessential romantic ballet that has moved audiences for generations! From October 1 to 23, 2026, the prestigious Teatro alla Scala Milano presents the unforgettable choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot in the acclaimed revival by Yvette Chauviré. Immerse yourself in a story of love, betrayal, and redemption, set between the carefree joy of peasant festivals and the ghostly appearance of the Willis, as captivating as they are merciless. “Giselle” enchants with its delicate narrative, brought to life through the technical brilliance and emotional depth of the dancers. The ballet creates a striking contrast between a sunny, vibrant world and a dark realm populated by vengeful spirits. La Scala’s production, with its classic staging by Aleksandr Benois and intricate costumes, is itself part of theatrical history and is infused with dedication and new life by the La Scala Ballet Company, keeping this wonderful work alive.
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is not merely an opera house; it is a landmark of the musical and dance world, a place where history manifests in every corner. Since its opening in 1778, it has hosted the greatest figures in classical arts and witnessed countless triumphant premieres that shaped Italy’s artistic heritage. The interior of the house is characterized by breathtaking splendor: the elegant tiers of boxes, the deep red velvet, and the glittering gold that shimmers beneath the imposing chandelier create an ambiance of incomparable opulence. But the true magic of La Scala lies in its legendary acoustics, which carry every step and every melody of Adolphe Adam’s score into the hall with extraordinary clarity and emotional depth, profoundly touching the audience. An evening at La Scala is an unforgettable event that nourishes the soul and invigorates the senses.

“Giselle” is a romantic ballet in two acts, renowned for its lyrical beauty, tragic plot, and the iconic role of Giselle. The music was composed by Adolphe Adam, and the choreography is credited to Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, with Perrot’s contribution to the choreography of the title role and the second act being particularly significant. The premiere took place on June 28, 1841, at the Paris Opéra and was an overwhelming success, making “Giselle” one of the most enduring works in the ballet canon.

The first act’s plot unfolds in a rural village in Silesia during a grape harvest festival. The young, innocent peasant girl Giselle passionately loves to dance but suffers from a weak heart. She falls in love with Loys, a supposed peasant who is, in reality, the engaged Duke Albrecht, disguised to woo Giselle. Hilarion, a gamekeeper who is also in love with Giselle, distrusts Loys and uncovers his true identity. When Albrecht is visited by his fiancée Bathilde and her retinue, his deception is revealed. Giselle is deeply shocked and so overwhelmed by her beloved’s betrayal that her weak heart breaks, and she dies.

The second act takes place in a ghostly forest by moonlight. Here lie the graves of the Wilis, undead spirits of young women who died before their wedding and now, under the rule of their queen Myrtha, dance men who trespass into their domain to their death. Giselle herself becomes a Wili. When Albrecht, plagued by remorse, visits Giselle’s grave, she appears to him. Myrtha and the other Wilis force Albrecht to dance to exhaustion, intending to kill him. Giselle, though a Wili herself, tries to protect Albrecht and pleads with the Wilis for mercy. Her unconditional love and the dawn, which breaks the power of the Wilis, save Albrecht’s life. Giselle disappears with the sunrise, and Albrecht is left alone with his remorse and the memory of their love.
