Florence – A Cultural Jewel of Opera and Classical Music
Florence is a city where every street tells a story – of art, beauty, and timeless creativity. At its heart lies the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a modern architectural landmark and home to one of Italy’s finest opera and concert seasons.
The 2025 season continous in autumn with a brilliant selection of operas, including Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles, Verdi’s dark and thrilling Macbeth, Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, and Puccini’s beloved La bohème, ending the year in a romantic flourish. Also featured are Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Scarlatti’s baroque opera Il Ciro – making 2025 a rich blend of the classical and the rare.
The 2026 season opens in January with Puccini’s dramatic Tosca, followed by the return of ballet (Pas de deux with Zakharova & Repin) and powerful operatic pairings like Pagliacci and Cavalleria rusticana. Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann and modern works like Romanzo criminale add variety through the year.
Another highlight of the calendar is the 88th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival (April–July 2026) – a world-class celebration of opera and symphonic music. The festival features John Adams’ thought-provoking The Death of Klinghoffer, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, and a full Beethoven symphony cycle conducted by Daniele Gatti. Legendary maestro Zubin Mehta returns to conduct Beethoven’s Ninth in honor of his 90th birthday, alongside performances of Mahler, Rimsky-Korsakov, Dvořák, and more.
From grand opera to rare gems and star-studded concerts, Florence offers a musical journey like no other – in one of Europe’s most captivating cities.
