Opera: Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)

by Gioachino Rossini
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2027-10-02 ... 2027-10-29

Completed with astonishing speed and celebrated worldwide, Gioachino Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” is one of the most beloved and frequently performed comic operas in history. This timeless masterpiece thrives on an inexorable comic mechanism, blending sharp social wit with unprecedented rhythmic energy and continuous melodic invention.

Leo Muscato’s ingenious staging brilliantly relocates the action to the backstage areas and dressing rooms of a theater, highlighting the tender yet cruel humanity of the characters. Conducting his first opera at La Scala is Giulio Cilona, a rising star of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He leads a stellar cast featuring Boris Pinkhasovich as the clever Figaro, former Academy student Mara Gaudenzi as Rosina, and Jack Swanson as Almaviva.

The wealthy young Count Almaviva is deeply in love with the beautiful Rosina, who is kept locked away by her elderly guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself for her dowry. To ensure Rosina loves him for himself and not his money, Almaviva disguises himself as a poor student named Lindoro. He enlists the help of Figaro, the clever and resourceful town barber. Together, they hatch a series of hilarious plots to gain entry to Bartolo’s house, with the Count appearing first as a drunken soldier and later as a substitute music teacher. Despite Bartolo’s constant suspicions and the scheming of the music master Basilio, the lovers outsmart the old guardian. Just before Bartolo can force a wedding, Figaro secures a notary, allowing Almaviva and Rosina to sign their marriage contract, leaving a outwitted Bartolo to accept defeat.
