- Esa-Pekka Salonen (b. 1958): Concerto for Horn and Orchestra (Italian Premiere) Esa-Pekka Salonen is a globally acclaimed conductor and composer from Finland. His Concerto for Horn and Orchestra is a new work co-commissioned by several leading institutions, including the Lucerne Festival, Finland Institute and Berliner Festspiele / Musikfest Berlin, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and Teatro alla Scala itself. This marks the Italian premiere of the concerto. Salonen is known for his complex yet accessible compositions, often featuring a rich sonic palette and innovative instrumental writing. The horn concerto is expected to fully explore the virtuosic and lyrical possibilities of the instrument.
- Jean Sibelius (1865-1957): Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82 Jean Sibelius is Finland’s national composer and one of the most influential symphonists of the 20th century. His Symphony No. 5 is one of his most famous and beloved works. It was composed during a period of intense communion with nature for the composer and is known for its organic development and nature-inspired themes. The most famous motif is arguably the “swan motif” in the finale, which evolves from a gentle glow to a radiant, majestic climax. The symphony is a masterpiece of orchestration and dramaturgy, unfolding deep emotions and a tremendous sonic impact.
