The Story
The opera is based on William Shakespeare’s penultimate work The Tempest.
The main characters are Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, deposed from the throne by his brother Antonio, King of Naples.
Prospero had to flee with his daughter Miranda and his assistant Gonzalo. He has settled on a lonely island, where he has risen to ruler thanks to his magical powers. He thirsts for revenge on his brother.
His servants are Caliban, son of the deceased witch Sycorax, who believes she is the rightful ruler of the island, and Ariel, the spirit of the wind.
As Antonio sails past the island with the Neapolitan company, Prospero asks Ariel for a storm that will capsize his brother Antonio’s ship.
After the storm, the castaways fight for their lives. Miranda watches this and is horrified when the father explains to her the reason for his revenge.
Caliban has fallen in love with Miranda, but Prospero wants nothing to do with it. The shipwrecked Ferdinand also falls in love with Miranda, who loves him back.
Deception and the magic power of Prospero cause much confusion. In the end nobody was hurt, Miranda and Ferdinand are a happy couple, Prospero forgives his brother Antonio, Caliban gets his island and Ariel his freedom back.
