The opera Simon Boccanegra was composed by Giuseppe Verdi as a commission for the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Verdi took the play Simón Bocanegra by Antonio García Gutiérrez as a basis. The first performance in 1857 was rejected by the public.
After a major revision with a text by Arrigo Boito, Simon Boccanegra was performed in a new version at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1881, to great public acclaim.
The opera Simon Boccanegra is set in Genoa. The Corsair Simon Boccanegra is to be elected doge because he had liberated the city from pirates and was very popular with the people. The drama begins when Simon Boccanegra, who comes from a humble background, falls in love with the patrician Jacopo Fiesco’s daughter Maria and has a child with her. Fiesco refuses to marry the two and keeps Maria away from her lover. Maria dies and Simon Boccanegra becomes Doge.
