The Story
Jacques Offenbach‘s opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann is divided into 5 acts. The three short stories The Sandman, Rat Krespel and The Story of the Lost Mirror Image from The Adventures of New Year’s Eve by E. T. A. Hoffmann formed the basis for the libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. The opera The Tales of Hoffmann premiered in Paris in 1881.
It was the second opera by Offenbach, who normally wrote operettas. Jacques Offenbach died before the opera was completed. Later Ernest Guiraud completed the opera.
