Symphony concert with Riccardo Chailly from 9 to 14 November 2023 at the Teatro alla Scala

The symphony concerts conducted by Riccardo Chailly at the Milan Scala present two important works of music history: the Symphony No. 4 in C minor, D 417 “Tragic” by Franz Schubert and the “Quattro pezzi sacri” (Four Sacred Pieces) by Giuseppe Verdi.

Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 in C minor, D 417 “Tragic” was composed in 1816 and is one of his early symphonies. Although the exact reason for the nickname “Tragic” is not known, the symphony reflects a somber and intensely emotional mood. The work consists of four movements and is characterized by Schubert’s lyrical melody and his harmonic refinements. It is a powerful and poignant piece that touches listeners with its expressive power and deep expression.
Verdi’s “Quattro pezzi sacri” is a collection of four sacred pieces composed by the composer in the last years of his life. The pieces include the “Ave Maria” for mixed choir, the “Stabat Mater” for double choir and orchestra, the “Laudi alla Vergine Maria” for female choir and orchestra, and the “Te Deum” for double choir and orchestra. Verdi’s sacred music is characterized by great expressiveness and intensity and shows his mastery in setting texts with deeply religious content to music.
