Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Dmitri Shostakovich is a gripping and unflinching masterpiece of 20th-century opera. With searing intensity and brutal realism, it tells the story of a woman who rebels against a life of repression, violence, and moral hypocrisy. The Teatro alla Scala opens its 2025/26 season with this extraordinary work on 7 December 2025 – the 50th anniversary year of Shostakovich’s death. In doing so, La Scala pays tribute to a groundbreaking composer and revives an opera that once shook the foundations of Soviet cultural politics.
After its triumphant premiere in Leningrad in 1934, the opera was condemned by Stalin’s regime after he attended a performance in 1936. The infamous Pravda article “Muddle Instead of Music” led to its censorship. Only decades later was the opera rehabilitated. La Scala now presents the bold and powerful original 1934 version.
The opening night at Teatro alla Scala is one of the most prestigious cultural events in Italy. When the curtain rises on 7 December, the world turns its eyes to Milan. La Scala is not just an opera house – it is a temple of music history. Since 1778, its red velvet, golden ornamentation, and unparalleled acoustics have welcomed the greatest voices and most legendary productions. The new staging of Lady Macbeth promises a memorable evening: Riccardo Chailly conducts, and Russian director Vasily Barkhatov makes his Scala debut.
Story of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich
Shostakovich’s opera is based on the novella by Nikolai Leskov and tells the tragic story of Katerina Izmailova. Trapped in a cold and patriarchal society as the wife of a wealthy merchant, she begins a passionate affair with the worker Sergei. Driven by desire and the dream of freedom, she murders first her father-in-law, then her husband. But her hopes are soon shattered: Sergei betrays her with the prisoner Sonetka. The opera ends in Siberia, where Katerina is deported as a convict. In utter despair and betrayal, she takes her own life.
