Program and History of the Concert
This concert presents George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” (HWV 56), an oratorio in three parts that is among the most famous and frequently performed works in classical music. It was composed in 1741 and premiered in Dublin in April 1742. Despite its premiere outside the Christmas season, “Messiah” is now inextricably linked with this time of year, particularly due to its second part, which addresses the birth and suffering of Christ and culminates in the famous “Hallelujah” chorus.
The oratorio is divided into three parts:
- Part I: Focuses on the prophecies of the Messiah’s arrival and the birth of Christ. It begins with somber predictions and develops into a message of hope and joy about the birth.
- Part II: Deals with the suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, as well as the spread of the Gospel. This part includes the famous “Hallelujah” chorus, often considered the climax of the entire work and traditionally heard standing.
