A performance of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” will be presented at La Scala in Milan. These two operas from the verismo repertoire are brought to the stage in an innovative interpretation by the director Mario Martone . Known for his ability to cast familiar works in a new light, Martone has had success with verismo operas such as La cena delle beffe, Andrea Chénier and Fedora.
In 2011, Martone took the first step in this adventure, presenting a diptych combining Ruggero Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” with Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”. The performance was characterized by streamlined realism and impressively expressed the drama and emotionality of both operas.
Martone’s staging combines these two operas into a captivating overall experience. His realistic approach makes the characters’ emotions and conflicts palpable, while increasing the tension between the stage world and reality. The performances of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” at La Scala promise a rousing performance of these two verismo masterpieces. Under the direction of Ciampaolo Bisanti and with first-class singers and an impressive production by Mario Martone, the audience is taken into a world full of passion, drama and human abysses.
Story of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci
“Cavalleria Rusticana” tells the story of love, betrayal and revenge in a Sicilian village community. The main character Turiddu returns from the war to find his former lover Lola married to another man, Alfio. In his anger, Turiddu begins an affair with Santuzza, leading to a tragic escalation of events.
“Pagliacci”, on the other hand, is about a traveling theater company that inspires the audience with its performances. But behind the facade of comedy hides a drama. The protagonist Canio discovers that his wife Nedda is having an affair, and the lines between the fictional world of the stage and reality become increasingly blurred.
