It is a rare opportunity to experience this grandiose work in the festive setting of La Scala – a musical gift for the Christmas season that will enthrall you.

This special Christmas concert evening at the Teatro alla Scala presents a combination of French orchestral music and a significant work of sacred choral music, together creating a festive and reflective atmosphere.

Francis Poulenc’s “Les Animaux modèles” (The Model Animals) is a ballet suite that premiered in 1941. Poulenc composed it during the German occupation of France, and the work is inspired by animal fables, which he set to music with wit and charm. The suite is known for its vibrant orchestration, accessible melodies, and its ability to capture various moods – from playful lightness to melancholic reflection. It is an example of Poulenc’s Neoclassicism and his unique ability to combine seriousness with elegant lightness.

Charles Gounod’s “Messe solennelle de Sainte-Cécile” (Solemn Mass of Saint Cecilia) is one of the most famous and beloved masses of the 19th century. It premiered in 1855 and is dedicated to Saint Cecilia, the patroness of church music. The Mass is characterized by its dramatic yet lyrical nature. Particularly well-known are the moving “Sanctus” with its majestic orchestral and choral entries, as well as the impressive solo parts. Gounod’s Mass combines Romantic melodicism with deep religious sentiment and radiates a sublime solemnity, making it an ideal work for a Christmas concert. The use of soloists, choir, orchestra, and obbligato organ lends the work a special sonic splendor and richness.
