And what a vocal spectacle this production brings to life! A cast of truly exquisite quality awaits you: Witness Luca Salsi and Dmitri Platanias in the complex role of Nabucodonosor, while the luminous Anna Netrebko shines brilliantly in the demanding part of Abigaille – a performance sure to be etched in memory. This exquisite ensemble is complemented by the impressive voices of Francesco Meli and Giorgio Berrugi as Ismaele, Michele Pertusi and Simon Lim as Zaccaria, and Veronica Simeoni as Fenena. This gathering of world-class artists promises a musical and emotional depth that one rarely encounters. And then, of course, there’s the celebrated “Va, pensiero” (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) – far beyond mere notes, it’s a timeless ode to hope and the unyielding spirit of humanity that will resonate deeply within your soul.

“Nabucodonosor”, more commonly known as “Nabucco,” is Giuseppe Verdi’s third opera and marked his triumphant breakthrough as a composer in 1842. The opera transports us to the fascinating setting of ancient Jerusalem and Babylon (modern-day Iraq) in 587 BC, drawing its dramatic power from the timeless biblical narrative surrounding the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II. At the heart of the gripping plot is the fierce conflict between the Hebrews and the Babylonians, which escalates with Nabucco’s invasion of Jerusalem and his subsequent merciless tyranny. However, the story is also a complex web of family ties and intrigues within Nabucco’s dynasty: his biological daughter Fenena, who loses her heart to the Hebrew Ismaele, and his adopted daughter Abigaille, an equally ambitious and vengeful warrior who firmly believes she is Nabucco’s firstborn and covets the throne with boundless greed. Abigaille devises sinister plans to seize power and ultimately succeeds in overthrowing Nabucco, who then descends into madness, believing himself to be divine. The world-famous “Va, pensiero” (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves), sung by the Hebrew captives, expresses their deep, poignant longing for their lost homeland and became the unofficial, powerful anthem of the Italian unification movement. At the opera’s conclusion, Nabucco comes to his senses, recognizes his error, converts to the God of the Hebrews, and regains his sanity and his throne, while Abigaille meets a tragic end in her own failure. The opera is renowned for its colossal choruses, thrilling ensembles, and gripping solo parts, which powerfully demonstrate Verdi’s early, yet already unmistakable, genius for musical drama and profound emotional portrayal.

This new production of "Nabucodonosor" represents another jewel in Music Director Maestro Riccardo Chailly's comprehensive and passionate exploration of Verdi's complete works, with which he concludes his profound engagement with the composer's early operas. The triumphant success of "Nabucodonosor" at La Scala in 1842 marked Verdi's definitive, unstoppable breakthrough and forged a deep, emotional connection between the Milanese theater and the burgeoning spirit of the Italian unification movement, the Risorgimento. The new staging, under the visionary direction of the established South African talent Alessandro Talevi, who has fascinatingly reconnected with his Italian roots, will lovingly integrate the divertissements composed by Verdi for the 1848 Brussels revival. The cast is truly top-tier, featuring Luca Salsi as Nabucodonosor, the charismatic Anna Netrebko as Abigaille, Francesco Meli as Ismaele, Michele Pertusi as Zaccaria, and Veronica Simeoni as Fenena.
