From February 22nd to March 3rd, 2026, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will present one of the undisputed highlights of the operatic repertoire: the famous double bill of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. These two one-act operas are the quintessence of Italian Verismo , an operatic movement that brings raw, unfiltered real life with all its primal emotions to the stage. The production, an acclaimed staging from the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam directed by the visionary Robert Carsen, promises a profound and visually stunning exploration of the themes of love, jealousy, honor, and revenge.
Under the masterful musical direction of Maestro Riccardo Frizza, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will unleash the full dramatic power of these scores—from the soaring melodies and the famous Intermezzo in Cavalleria to the tension-filled atmosphere of Pagliacci. Carsen’s direction is renowned for its precision in revealing psychological depth and human abysses. In Cavalleria rusticana, the scorching Sicilian sun witnesses a deadly tragedy on Easter Sunday, while in Pagliacci, the lines between theater and reality blur terrifyingly as a stage comedy culminates in a real-life crime. This operatic evening is a tour de force of passion and an unforgettable experience for all lovers of grand Italian musical drama.
