Simon Boccanegra | Teatro del Maggio
Teatro del Maggio Piazza Vittorio Gui, 1, Firenze, FI, ItalyVerdi’s Simon Boccanegra at Teatro del Maggio, Nov 15–24. A dark masterpiece of power, intrigue, and reconciliation.

Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra returns to the stage of Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino from 15 to 24 November in a powerful new staging directed by Àlex Ollé of the acclaimed Catalan collective La Fura dels Baus. Conducted by James Conlon, this opera reveals Verdi’s mature genius in one of his darkest and most complex works. First presented in Venice in 1857 and later revised in 1881 with Arrigo Boito, the score unfolds with a unique focus on the depth and weight of the male voices, particularly baritones and basses, echoing the turbulent conflicts of Genoa in the 14th century.
Based on Antonio García Gutiérrez’s drama, the opera portrays Simon Boccanegra, the Doge of Genoa, whose political victories are shadowed by personal tragedy and relentless conspiracies. The atmosphere is marked by sombre colors, dramatic power struggles, and Verdi’s unparalleled ability to blend intimate emotions with monumental historical themes.
This new production is brought to life with sets by Alfons Flores and costumes by Lluc Castells, promising a contemporary yet timeless interpretation of Verdi’s masterpiece. With baritone George Petean as Boccanegra, Jongmin Park as Fiesco, and Carolina López Moreno as Amelia, the cast unites some of today’s leading Verdi interpreters.
An opera both political and profoundly human, Simon Boccanegra remains one of Verdi’s most fascinating works, resonating with its exploration of power, reconciliation, and the fragile hope for peace.
The Story of Simon Boccanegra
Set in Genoa during the mid-14th century, Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra weaves political intrigue with personal drama. The opera opens with Simon Boccanegra’s election as Doge, supported by Paolo Albiani and Pietro, but marked by tragedy: he loses his beloved Maria, daughter of his enemy Jacopo Fiesco, and believes their child is lost.
Years later, Simon, now Doge, discovers that Amelia Grimaldi, whom he seeks to marry to an ally, is in fact his long-lost daughter. Their moving recognition scene stands at the heart of the opera, blending personal joy with political consequences. Yet intrigue continues: Amelia loves the noble Gabriele Adorno, while Paolo, rejected by her, plots against the Doge.
Fiesco, still bitter, longs for revenge, but is eventually reconciled with Simon after learning Amelia’s true identity. Betrayed and poisoned by Paolo, Simon faces his death. In his final moments, he entrusts Genoa’s future to Adorno and Amelia, urging peace and reconciliation.
Through dark timbres and powerful choral writing, Verdi fuses the private and the political into a drama of enduring resonance, where power, betrayal, and forgiveness intertwine.
