The Master’s Renaissance: Bergamo 2026

The Donizetti Opera Festival 2026 solidifies its reputation as the world’s foremost authority on preserving and rediscovering the legacy of Gaetano Donizetti. Under the visionary artistic direction of Francesco Micheli and the musical excellence of Riccardo Frizza, Bergamo transforms every November into an international hub for Bel Canto. The 2026 program features a bold selection: from the dramatic intensity of L’esule di Roma and the oriental allure of Alahor in Granata to the sparkling satire of Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali. Performances take place at the master’s authentic venues—the magnificent Teatro Donizetti in the lower town and the intimate Teatro Sociale in the medieval upper town. This blend of musicological precision and Italian passion makes the festival an unparalleled experience for connoisseurs. For travel planning and the full schedule, we recommend visiting the official Donizetti Opera Festival website. With our specialized travel packages, we guarantee access to the best seats and a supporting program that brings Donizetti’s history to life in his hometown.

Teatro Donizetti Bergamo

Bergamo: A City Dedicated to Music

A trip to the Donizetti Festival is always a discovery of Bergamo itself. While the modern center surrounding the Teatro Donizetti impresses with elegance and top-tier gastronomy, the Città Alta – accessible by funicular – transports you back in time. Here, amidst Venetian walls (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and magnificent churches like Santa Maria Maggiore, every corner breathes music history. Our tours are designed to ensure you not only enjoy the performances but also visit Donizetti’s birthplace and immerse yourself in the culinary world of Lombardy. We prioritize quality: best tickets combined with central quality hotels ensure a stress-free and culturally profound stay.

The Venues of the Donizetti Festival

One of the things that makes the Donizetti Festival so unique is its use of multiple venues throughout the city. The festival takes place in some of Bergamo’s most beautiful and historic locations, including the Teatro Donizetti (Piazza Cavour 15), and the Teatro Sociale (Via Colleoni 4).

The Teatro Donizetti is the festival’s main venue and is considered one of the most important opera houses in Italy. Built in the early 19th century, it has a rich history and has hosted some of the world’s most famous singers and musicians.

The Opera Composer Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti, opera composer from Bergamo, is considered to be the inventor of Italian romantic music. A revolutionary in art and a brilliant creator of stories, he was ahead of his time and still delights us with his operas today. Gaetano Donizetti was born on November 29, 1797 in Bergamo to poor parents in a basement apartment. The house where he was born was in the Borgo Canale outside the Venetian city walls of Bergamo.

The opera composer Simon Mayr, who was then active as Kapellmeister in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Bergamo, recognized Donizetti’s talent and supported the boy financially and musically. Simon Mayr is also referred to as Gaetano’s second father.

Donizetti has composed a large number of operas, but only a few have become major international successes, such as Anna Bolena, L’Elisir d’Amore and Lucia di Lammermoor, to name just the popular hits.

Places to Visit in Bergamo During the Festival

The Donizetti Festival is a great opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Bergamo. The city is divided into two parts, the Città Alta (upper town) and the Città Bassa (lower town). The Città Alta is the historic center of Bergamo and is home to many of the city’s most important landmarks, including the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Piazza Vecchia, and the Rocca di Bergamo.

During the festival, the Città Bassa comes alive with music and culture. But Bergamo has much more to offer than just the festival. The city is known for its beautiful architecture, its delicious food, and its rich history. Be sure to take some time to explore the city’s museums, art galleries, and restaurants during your visit.

How to Get to Bergamo for Donizetti Festival

Bergamo is easily accessible by air, train, or car. The nearest airport is Orio al Serio International Airport, which is located just a few kilometers from the city center. There are also frequent train connections to Bergamo from Milan and other major Italian cities.

Once you arrive in Bergamo, getting around is easy. The city has an excellent public transportation system, with buses and funiculars connecting the upper and lower parts of the city. Taxis are also readily available, and it’s easy to walk between many of the festival’s venues.
