Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca returns to the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a powerful revival of Massimo Popolizio’s acclaimed production. With Michele Gamba conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio, alongside the Children’s Choir of the Accademia, this production brings the full emotional impact of Puccini’s score to life.
Premiered in 1900 and based on Victorien Sardou’s play, Tosca is a compelling opera of passion, politics, and betrayal. Puccini’s intense, through-composed score weaves short, recurring motifs into a web of tension and drama. His orchestration is rich and expressive, at times bordering on expressionism, capturing every flicker of desire, fear, and defiance.
At the heart of the drama are two passionate lovers: the fiery diva Floria Tosca and the idealistic painter Mario Cavaradossi. Their love is threatened by the brutal Baron Scarpia, the tyrannical chief of police who manipulates events with sadistic precision. Puccini’s music paints these characters with vivid emotional detail, making Tosca one of the most visceral operas ever composed.
This revival at Florence’s prestigious Maggio Musicale Fiorentino brings together striking stagecraft and exceptional voices to deliver a must-see operatic event.
The Plot of Tosca
Rome, 1800, during the Napoleonic wars: Political prisoner Cesare Angelotti escapes and is aided by painter Mario Cavaradossi, a liberal sympathizer. Cavaradossi is in love with Floria Tosca, a celebrated opera singer known for her fiery spirit. Their love is threatened by Baron Scarpia, Rome’s sadistic chief of police.
Scarpia desires Tosca and uses his power to manipulate her, having Cavaradossi arrested and tortured. He offers Tosca a cruel bargain: her lover’s life in exchange for her body. Out of desperation, she agrees—but after receiving the supposed pardon, she kills Scarpia.
Hoping to save Cavaradossi, Tosca rushes to the planned execution, believing it to be staged. But Scarpia’s deception continues even after death—the bullets are real, and Cavaradossi dies. Devastated and cornered, Tosca takes her own life.
Tosca is a gripping opera of love, power, and sacrifice, where passion meets brutality and fate offers no mercy.
