WOZZECK | Teatro del Maggio, Florence
Teatro del Maggio Piazza Vittorio Gui, 1, Firenze, FI, ItalyAlban Berg’s Wozzeck at Teatro del Maggio (Sept 27–Oct 3): expressionist masterpiece of love, despair, and human tragedy.

Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, one of the defining masterpieces of 20th-century opera, returns to the stage of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino from September 27 to October 3. Based on Georg Büchner’s groundbreaking play, the opera explores themes of alienation, despair, and violence in a raw and uncompromising vision of humanity. Berg’s decision to set Büchner’s text was deeply personal; he wrote to Anton Webern in 1918 that the play had left such an overwhelming impression that he felt compelled to compose the opera immediately.
Premiered in 1925 at the Berlin Staatsoper, Wozzeck quickly became a landmark of modernism and an emblem of expressionist theatre. Berg structured the opera in three acts and fifteen scenes, each shaped by traditional musical forms such as suite, passacaglia, or march—yet transformed through his searing orchestral language. His use of Sprechgesang heightens the protagonist’s fractured humanity, eschewing lyrical beauty in favor of existential truth.
This new staging, a co-production with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, is directed by Deborah Warner with conductor Thomas Guggeis leading the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The distinguished cast includes Wolfgang Koch as Wozzeck and Anja Kampe as Marie. With sets by Hyemi Shin, costumes by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting by Adam Silverman, and choreography by Kim Brandstrup, the production brings a sharp visual and emotional edge to Berg’s harrowing score.
A work that still shocks and moves a century after its creation, Wozzeck stands as a timeless reminder of the fragility of human existence and the destructive forces of society.
The Story of Wozzeck
The story of Wozzeck unfolds in three acts, tracing the downfall of a simple soldier crushed by poverty, humiliation, and despair. Wozzeck is tormented by the Captain and exploited by the Doctor, who subjects him to cruel experiments. His only solace is his relationship with Marie, with whom he has a child. Yet Marie, weary of their hardship, succumbs to the advances of the Drum Major.
Consumed by jealousy and driven to madness, Wozzeck murders Marie by a pond in one of opera’s most devastating climaxes. Haunted by visions and guilt, he drowns while trying to wash away the blood, leaving their child orphaned.
Berg interweaves this tragic tale with a radical musical architecture: each scene adopts a classical form, from fugue to passacaglia, reimagined with biting dissonance and an anguished orchestral palette. The fragmented Sprechgesang style deepens the sense of alienation, making Wozzeck’s suffering visceral and immediate.
Wozzeck is not merely the portrait of one man’s downfall but a powerful indictment of social oppression, psychological torment, and human cruelty—an opera as unsettling today as at its premiere.
