The ballet triptych at La Scala in Milan brings together three 20th-century masterpieces by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins for an unforgettable evening. George Balanchine returns to the stage with his choreography “Theme and Variations” in a new look designed by Luisa Spinatelli. An evolution of classical ballet, this classical-style masterpiece was created to recreate the heyday of classical ballet in Russia through the music of Tchaikovsky.
Two of Jerome Robbins’ most famous ballets, both based on piano pieces by Chopin, will be performed for the first time at La Scala. “Dances at a Gathering” is a gem of pure dance inspired by musical structure and nuance. It offers an ironic and brilliant insight into the reverie and extravagance of a group of characters attending a piano recital.
This ballet triptych celebrates the timeless modernity of Balanchine and Robbins, two pre-eminent 20th-century choreographers. Her works present a perfect marriage of music and dance while pushing the boundaries of classical ballet and exploring new forms of expression.
With an impressive cast and a new aesthetic interpretation of Balanchine’s “Theme and Variations”, the ballet triptych at La Scala promises to be a stirring and captivating performance. The audience will be immersed in the world of classical and contemporary ballet and experience the beauty, elegance and expressiveness of these masterpieces.
